RAIL services between York and Scotland have resumed today after storms caused landslips and line closures.
The downpours led to sections of the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed being flooded, with embankments being washed away and more than 40 tonnes of earth spilling onto the track.
An hourly East Coast service is now operating in both directions between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh, with passengers who were unable to travel yesterday or this morning being able to use their tickets today or tomorrow on East Coast's London to Newcastle and Scotland route.
East Coast trains between London and Newcastle are expected to operate a near-normal service.
"We appreciate that travel during the last 24 hours has been difficult for everybody, but anybody who has seen pictures of the damage caused by this exceptionally severe weather will understand the challenge involved in getting trains moving again," said East Coast managing director Karen Boswell.
