IT’S amazing what Sky TV can do. Conditions, the debut record from The Temper Trap, set the foundations for this Australian band thanks to single Sweet Disposition’s repeat play on Sky Sports and it has taken just a 30-second excerpt to lift this self-titled sophomore album up to dizzy heights in the UK charts.
Rupert Murdoch’s empire took a sample of third track Trembling Hands to plug its Playhouse series on Sky Arts and, as a snapshot, it is hard to argue with its majesty.
If only The Temper Trap could maintain the high standard.
Need Your Love is, admittedly, a blistering start but, from there, it meanders along in unspectacular fashion.
London’s Burning fails to avoid cliché as a comment on last year’s riots. Not only does it sound like a poor man’s The Clash but it registers like a lecture from far distant cousins – patched in commentary from a looter and exhortations from David Cameron only making it worse. The ordinary abounds.
