THE Yorkshire Regiment’s newest “recruit” is unlikely to leave his day job to serve on the front line – but could provide important specialist help.
The Regimental Secretary Lt Col David O’Kelly gave the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu a regimental beret, prayer book and prayer card during morning prayers at Bishopthorpe Chapel.
The Archbishop prays for the Armed Forces every day and has included the Yorkshire Regiment by name in his prayers.
Lt Col O’Kelly said: “All those involved with The Yorkshire Regiment will be deeply touched that the Archbishop of York should take such a close and personal interest in what they are doing at the moment. “He clearly cares about all our soldiers who have been, and are still, serving in Afghanistan and to present him with our regimental headdress to act as a focus for prayers and blessings is very special.”
Soldiers from 3rd Battalion and part of 4th Battalion of the regiment are currently in Afghanistan and 2nd Battalion is being held in reserve in Cyprus.
The 1st Battalion and members of 4th Battalion recently returned to the UK from the frontline.
