Cameron Simpson scored a hat-trick as a strong Heworth ARLC Under-15s side enjoyed a comfortable 28-4 Yorkshire League division two win over Hunslet Parkside.
The Villagers had most of the play in the first half but their only try was Tom Leonard’s early effort, goaled by Jonny Rawsthorne.
Hunslet, with the wind at their backs, started the second half well but the strong-running of Heworth’s forwards started to take its toll and Billy Sturdy scored a converted try before Simpson got his treble, his first after a good run and quick play-the-ball by the impressive Tom Leonard, with two of his tries goaled.
Hunslet’s only try was a long-range interception.
All 18 Heworth players did well with some great defence and very good attacking play, with Simpson, Tom Hesmondalgh and Connor Page sharing man-of-the-match honours.
York Acorn U15s continued their quest for the division four title with a 32-10 win at Whinmoor Warriors.
Acorn trailed 6-4 after a tough first half, Tom Noble getting their try, and Henry Andrews’ touchdown, scooting over from a good offload, was also countered by a Whinmoor equaliser at 10-10.
But then Acorn took control, putting together some attractive rugby to bag five tries without reply in the last 15 minutes.
Robbie Langstaff split the defence, Billy Nicholson exploited gaps, Lloyd Todd crashed through, and Mikey Long scored twice from range, shrugging off would-be tacklers both times.
Jack Burgess was named man of the match for his uncompromising work, while Jacob Walker carried the ball well, timing his runs superbly, and was unlucky not to score. Other notable performances came from Reece Rushworth, with usual strong defence, and Jimmy Hardwick and Billy Nicholson at half-back.
Man-of-the-match Harry Radcliffe scored a hat-trick of tries and goals as Heworth U14s dominated against Drighlington in a 26-6 win. Jim Douthwaite powered through and Jack Smith scored a great long-ranger. Heworth’s forwards applied constant presssure with the likes of Arran Naismith making strong runs, while the goal-line defence was excellent, being breached only once.
York Acorn U9s continued their rise with a 12 tries to five victory over Crigglestone – a team who had beaten them earlier in the season.
Man-of-the-match Liam White bagged three tries, though he was topped on the scoreboard by coaches’ player-of-the-match Flynn Pagdin, with five. Top tackler Ethan Sutcliffe also scored.
New Earswick All Blacks U14s are seeking new players. They train at New Earswick on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm until 7.30pm.
