FORTNIGHTLY bin collections are being introduced for more than 16,000 homes in Harrogate.
The switch is designed to encourage higher recycling rates, with the first phase of the scheme beginning this week. A further 46,000 properties will move to fortnightly collections next summer.
The authority is the last in North Yorkshire to collect waste in this way, with wheelie bins replacing plastic bags for rubbish which cannot be recycled. A council spokesman said: “This is vital if we are to drive down landfill tax, which is ultimately borne by the council taxpayer.”
Waste which cannot be recycled will be collected every two weeks, with recycling collections taking place on the alternate week.
