I COULD not agree more with Linda Maggs (Letters, June 29) about the shameful removal of litter bins around the city.
As a community group, Fulford in Bloom has been working really hard over the past two years to improve the environment and visual appearance of the village.
The Yorkshire in Bloom judges will be visiting shortly and one of the key things they will look out for is litter.
In Fulford we have lost 12 litter bins, including many on Main Street. It’s a pity there was no consultation with local residents, or even the parish council, before deciding which bins to remove.
I’m puzzled at the decision to leave one at a barely used bus stop but remove the one where all the school-children board the bus after visiting the sweet shop. The removal of a litter bin from outside the convenience store is particularly short-sighted.
As Mrs Maggs says, savings should be made by encouraging and inspiring voluntary effort.
