CHINA China, the china and crystal store based at York Designer Outlet, is to close.
Adam Sinclair, owner of China China as well as fine china shop Mulberry Hall in the city centre, said no decision had yet been made about the future of the business or its five staff.
He released a statement saying: “Amicable discussions have concluded that the store is no longer producing sufficient return for either party.
“So, at the end of August after 14 years it will be time to move on and we wish McArthurGlen all the very best for the future.
“In the meantime there is a very good instore buying opportunity for our loyal customers who we thank for their support over the years. We will keep them advised of our plans for the future.”
The store underwent a £100,000 refurbishment, including new flooring, signage, fixtures and fittings, branding and lighting in July 2008, when it extended its lease for ten years at York Designer Outlet.
Mr Sinclair was criticised as one of the main objectors to the expansion of Monks Cross while having his own out-of-town store.
He said he opened China China after being told by the Royal Doulton group that one of Mulberry Hall’s competitors was negotiating for space there and that Royal Doulton and McArthurGlen wanted to work with him to build bridges with the city centre.
He said his opposition to the Monks Cross expansion was not about him or any individual involved, but what was right for the city of York, guided by local, regional and national planning policies.
