Peter Brown (Letters June 29) states that public outrage at tax avoidance is based on “ignorant claptrap”. Hardly surprising seeing that he signs himself off as a chartered certified accountant.
I have worked in taxation for more than 30 years and am far from ignorant on these matters. Artificial and abusive tax avoidance schemes which allow the rich and the powerful to pay a pittance in tax on their millions, while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet in these trying times are immoral.
Even if these people and organisations paid their rightful share of the tax burden in this country they would still have enormous amounts of wealth at their disposal. Just how many millions does a person need in their lifetime?
They appear to believe it is their right to keep money from the struggling health, education, law enforcement and armed services.
They have used this country when times were good, but are not prepared to pay their way when times are bad.
They should be named and shamed.
