A support group is raising awareness of a rare cancer caused by exposure to deadly asbestos.
To mark Mesothelioma Awareness Day, a stand will be held at the entrance of York Hospital from 10am today.
The York Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Support Group will be providing information and advice, along with a local solicitor.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs which eventually renders the patient unable to breathe. The Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Support Group is dedicated to making the general public aware that maximum precautions should be taken when dealing with situations where they believe asbestos could still be present. Jean Stockdale, of the group, said: “We would urge companies who employ plumbers, electricians, joiners and heating engineers to ensure that their employees are aware of Mesothelioma.
The number of cases of the disease is not expected to peak for some time to come so it is essential that younger generations do not regard it as an old man’s illness. It can happen to anyone.”
