THE theatre production of Rock of Ages is an enormous hit both on Broadway and in the West End.
The Eighties’ Glam metal jukebox musical is a powerhouse of both the great power tracks we all remember (Paradise City, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Here I Go Again) and the not so wonderful (I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll). Of course, we all want to know from the new movie version if Tom Cruise can sing?
Well, quite frankly no. He has never been known for his musical powers, and certainly not of the sleazy LA heavy metal variety. Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Brand are slightly more convincing, even when Brand interprets Starship’s wretched We Built This City. Mary J Blige saves the day with her covers of Harden My Heart, Every Rose Has Its Thorn and Don’t Stop Believin’, here given a blistering rock, rather than Gleeful arrangement.
