THE celebrations to mark 800 years since York was given its Royal Charter led to a big increase in visitors to the city.
Figures released by City of York Council show footfall for the weekend was up more than 13 per cent on expected levels.
Saturday saw a 19.3 per cent increase in visitors, despite the postponement of the planned flotilla on the River Ouse and the poor weather.
The celebrations culminated on Monday evening in a performance at the Eye of York of the choral piece, This York, which was written especially for the anniversary.
