OUR Lady Queen of Martyrs RC Primary School have beaten off competition from 12,000 rival schools to reach the ASDA Kwikcricket finals, writes Charlie Hollinrake.
The 12,000 entrants have been whittled down to just 16 finalists, one of which is Holgate-based Our Lady Queen.
There were four groups of four in the regional qualifiers at Headingley and the York school breezed through all of the group stage games, beating schools from South, West and East Yorkshire.
They then went on to win their semi-final against Richmond to qualify for the national finals day at Leicestershire’s Grace Road ground on Tuesday.
Outstanding bowling performances by Thomas Brown and Charlie Brooks, combined with flawless batsmanship from Joe Hickey and Alex Sanderson, made Our Lady Queen of Martyrs a force to be reckoned with.
The team, captained by Daniel Watkinson, were coached to success by Acomb Cricket Club’s first team captain Simon Brown.
Brown said: “By qualifying for this stage they are effectively now one of the top 16 schools in the country.
“We are really proud of what they have achieved.”
The team were presented with their medals by Yorkshire County Cricket Club wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.
