A YORK boxing club is benefiting from the Olympics to the tune of £48,000.
Community Spirit Boxing Club, based at York Railway Institute in New Lane, have received two grants through Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.
An award of £47,724 will be used to extend the community hall at York Railway Institute to create a purpose-built boxing facility.
The second grant for £740, which was awarded by funding partner Thomas Cook to help provide activity for disadvantaged young people.
The Inspired Facilities fund is part of Places People Play, Sport England’s programme to deliver a London 2012 legacy of increased mass participation in sport.
Community Spirit Boxing Club was established in 2007 by coaches Andrew Miller and Andrew Baxter and now has more than 200 members.
Club secretary David Dewey said: “Community Spirit Boxing Club is a shining example of a voluntary sports club.
“This investment will not only secure the long-term future of the club, but also significantly enhance and expand what the club already does so well.”
