YORK City Rowing Club ace Tom Ransley and his Great Britain eight crew finished second to favourites Germany in the London 2012 heats today.
Reigning world champions Germany went out fast in heat two on the opening day of Olympic competition at Eton Dorney.
However, Ransley and his crew mates pulled back to finish less than half a length behind, with the Netherlands third and reigning Olympic champions Canada in fourth.
The USA won the easier opening heat and they, along with Germany, have qualified automatically for Wednesday's final.
Great Britain will join all the other crews in the repechage on Monday.
Harrogate-born Debbie Flood and her quadruple sculls crew finished fourth in their heat and will also have to battle for a place in the final in Monday's repechage.
