A CAMERA retailer is to move into larger premises in York later this week as part of a wider revamp of a city-centre block.

Jessops is to reopen in the former Game shop in Spurriergate on Saturday.

The move is part of the redevelopment of the White Swan Hotel in Piccadilly, where the store is currently based.

A spokesman for Jessops said: β€œIt’s a much bigger unit and a much greater focus for us in the York area.”

The Game unit in Spurriergate closed in March, when Game and Gamestation went into administration.

Plans for the White Swan development went on show to the public earlier this month.

It was proposed to demolish the landmark building and replace it with a new hotel and shops, but after this drew opposition the owners have proposed converting the 100-year-old building into homes and retail units.

A planning application is expected to be submitted later in the summer, with a decision expected in the autumn.

The Press understands Waitrose has expressed an interest in occupying one of the new shops.

Jessops has applied to City of York Council for planning permission for new signage, including two new fascia signs and an illuminated hanging sign.

Jessops used to have three York stores, including ones in Parliament Street and at Monks Cross.
