THE York Mystery Plays have finally returned to the spectacular setting of the Museum Gardens for the first time since 1988.
About 250 actors from across the York community last night joined professionals Ferdinand Kingsley, playing God and Jesus, and former Coronation Street star Graeme Hawley, playing the Devil, on a huge stage in front of the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey for the first night’s performance.
Organisers said about 1,000 tickets for the 1,400-seat auditorium had been sold for the first night, with about 25,000 of the 36,000 seats available over the coming month sold so far.
A spokesman said several matinee performances had almost sold out, and Friday and Saturday night shows had also been selling particularly well.
