BARGAIN hunters will have a field day tomorrow when hundreds of costumes and shoes worn during the York Mystery Plays are put on sale.
Actors in the spectacular outdoor production, staged throughout August in the Museum Gardens to critical acclaim, wore clothes in the style of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
Many were costumes made from scratch by a team of 120 volunteers, while other clothes and accessories were sourced from charity shops or donated by members of the public.
A spokesman for York Theatre Royal and Riding Lights Theatre Company, which staged the plays in conjunction with York Museums Trust, said they had no available space to store the costumes, so nothing could be left over.
The sale will be held between 10am and 1pm tomorrow at the De Grey Rooms near the theatre, with all money raised going towards the cost of the production.
“It all needs to be sold, so this is your chance to pick up a real bargain,” the spokesman said. “All clothes must go. Prices start at £2. Some special pieces will be placed into silent auction between 11am to noon, but other items will be sold on a first come, first served basis.”
He said remaining Mystery Plays souvenirs and merchandise would also be available to buy at discounted prices.
“This is great opportunity to pick up some one-of-a-kind items at low prices, some of which would fetch a profit if they were to be sold on.”
Items include menswear, ladieswear and childrenswear, accessories including hats, gloves, scarves, handbags, aprons and suitcases and 600 pairs of shoes.
