I HAVE noticed over the past several days readers’ comments about the state of our streets.

How can we invite people to visit beautiful York when you see these kind of images. It really is about time things were tightened up here.

Here is one recent example. I was walking through Bootham Park Hospital the other day, where new signs already have graffiti on them. Surely we are capable of doing something about this kind of criminal damage that is making our city an eyesore.

Maybe these people are getting away it and are untraceable or unstoppable; maybe if and when they are caught, they just laugh it off as a few hours community service is neither here nor there to these people.

Come on – let’s deal with these offenders and start to get the city cleaned up. It is no use getting the so-called litter police to fine a few people for dropping litter. The real culprits need tackling – oh, and make sure the sentence fits the offence.
