TWO young beer businesses have been boosted by trade from local fans of Scottish football.
Scarborough brewery the North Riding Brew Pub and Yorkshire Ales beer shop in Snaith have had to start a waiting list after releasing a beer in association with the York Hearts supporters’ club.
The brewery and the supporters’ club produced a real ale to celebrate the victory of Heart of Midlothian football club over their Edinburgh rivals Hibernian in last season’s Scottish Cup final. The 5.1 per cent ABV beer, representing the 5-1 scoreline in the final, is called Marooned to reflect the team’s colours.
It also acknowledges fans “marooned” in York, 200 miles away from their team, and uses a hop called Dr Rudi, chosen in honour of player Rudi Skacel, who scored twice in the game.
The beer was intended for a small run for the York club’s Burns Night celebrations, but brewer Stuart Neilson and distributor Adrian Pettitt of Yorkshire Ales have received orders from all over Britain and as far as Canada. Mr Pettitt said it was the best-selling beer the shop had stocked so far and North Riding Brew pub now planned to brew more to keep up with demand.
