A FIREMAN from North Yorkshire has praised new training after he helped save his daughter when she began choking during a family meal.
Firefighter Ian Hinchcliffe, who serves at Filey station, had received the Immediate Emergency Care programme first-aid training, which was launched last year, in March.
Mr Hinchcliffe was having dinner with his family days after learning about how to treat choking victims when his daughter started struggling to breathe.
It quickly became apparent that she was choking, and she began losing consciousness.
Mr Hinchliffe followed his training and managed to dislodge a piece of roast pork which had been blocking his daughter’s airway. She did not require any further treatment due to his quick actions.
Mr Hinchliffe said: “If this situation had arisen before I’d had the enhanced first-aid training I wouldn’t have known what to do.
“I’m convinced that this training, and the action I was able to take because of it, prevented the situation from dramatically worsening.”
