AN ACCIDENT involving three lorries brought chaos to a major route through North Yorkshire during rush hour today.
A truck came off the A1(M) five miles south of Catterick and crashed into two other stationary lorries parked in a layby at 4.15am. The collision left glass bottles carried by one of the lorries strewn across the road.
Nobody was injured but part of the northbound lane had to be closed until about 10.30am to allow a clean-up of the debris. Much of the rush-hour traffic was diverted off the road and onto the A19 and other routes.
Meanwhile, fire crews were called to the stretch of the A1(M) between its junctions with Wetherby and Knaresborough this afternoon after the rear axle of a lorry caught fire, also causing traffic disruption. Nobody was injured and the fire was dealt with by about 4.30pm.
