A DRIVER escaped without injury when a pick-up truck was hit by a train in North Yorkshire.
British Transport Police said the train on the Esk Valley line struck the vehicle at the Market Garden level crossing, south of Ruswarp, near Whitby, shortly after noon on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said while the Mitsubishi vehicle was extensively damaged, the train remained upright and on the tracks following the impact.
He said an investigation into why the collision happened had been launched and that the Rail Accident Investigation Branch had been informed.
Train services between Middlesbrough and Whitby were cancelled and replaced by buses running between the towns.
