SPECIALIST engineers will attempt to fix the historic Whitby swing bridge today, after it became lodged in the open position last week.
A fault in the hydraulic system led to the failure, which happened when the bridge was swinging open for river traffic.
Work was carried out to upgrade the bridge, which was built in 1909, last year, with timber replaced to protect it, new navigation lights and waterproofing of electric cabling, as well as raising of electrical junction boxes as a precaution for high waters.
A shuttle bus will operate until the bridge is operational again, but a timescale has not yet been announced.
