AN unexploded mortar caused a scare when it was handed in to Scarborough police station today.
Police said a member of the public took the old munition to the station earlier today after he found it while clearing out his grandfather's garage.
It was left in the police station car park and the road around the station - Northway - was briefly closed while army experts were called.
The bomb disposal unit later found the mortar was empty and removed it from the car park, which was reopened by around 2.30pm.
