MOTORISTS on the A1 in North Yorkshire faced further disruption after a second crash this afternoon.
Firefighters were called to a single-vehicle accident which tenporarily closed the southbound dual carriageway between Boroughbridge and the A59 Allerton Park junction.
The crash came only hours after a 72-year-old man died in a crash involving three vehicles, which led to the southbound carriageway between Scotch Corner and Barton being closed for more than seven hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and carried out initial investigations.
Football fans travelling from Newcastle to Old Trafford were diverted via Middlesbrough and Thirsk on the A19 to avoid the crash scene.
The Darlington man who died was driving a red Ford Focus south at 7.40am which collided with a silver Peugeot 206 and a black Nissan Qashqai between Scotch Corner and Junction 56 near Barton. He was declared dead at the scene. Police have not released details of his identity.
His two passengers were uninjured, as were the drivers of the other two vehicles. North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them by ringing 101.
