A FUNERAL service will take place in Malton this week for the young Irish jockey killed in a suspected arson attack on a block of flats in Norton.
Friends, family and colleagues of 18-year-old Jamie Kyne are expected to attend the service on Thursday, before his body is flown back to Ireland for a private ceremony.
His parents have invited everyone in the racing fraternity to the funeral mass and service of thanksgiving, which will take place at St Leonard and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church at 11am.
His body is expected to be carried in to the church early on Wednesday evening by fellow jockeys before a short vigil service.
Yesterday, North Yorkshire police confirmed inquests in to the deaths of the promising young jockey and his friend and fellow rider, Jan Wilson, 19, had been opened and adjourned until a later date, by the Coroner for Scarborough.
The two were killed when fire tore through the block of flats where they were partying with friends early on the morning of Saturday, September 5.
A local man has been arrested and released on bail in connection with the incident.
Father Tim Bywater, of St Leonard and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, said: “There will be a vigil service at St Leonard’s at 6pm on Wednesday.
“After a short service there will be an opportunity to for people to pay their respects privately.”
The body of Jan Wilson was expected to be taken back to Scotland yesterday, where her funeral is planned for September 23.
Helen Wilson, of the Injured Jockeys’ Fund, has been in daily contact with Kyne’s parents since the 18 year-old lost his life.
She said: “Jamie’s parents were anxious that a service be held for him in Malton prior to them taking their son home to Galway.”
