THE mother of a promising apprentice jockey killed in a blaze which tore through flats in a North Yorkshire town has revealed how a fund set up in her daughter’s name is helping other youngsters.

Jan Wilson, 19, died when a fire broke out at Buckrose Court in Norton, near Malton, in September, with the flames also claiming the life of her fellow young rider Jamie Kyne, 18.

Her parents Margaret and Drew, from the Scottish town of Forfar, subsequently set up the Jockey Jan Memorial Fund and say it has already raised more than £8,000, with the money being donated to organisations Jan was involved in and trophies dedicated to her being awarded to young jockeys.

“I’m looking at starting pony racing in Yorkshire as a possibility – we may put up trophies out of Jan’s fund to encourage children to become more involved,” said Mrs Wilson.

“Jan went about helping people all her short life and we want to do the same. I’m doing everything I set out to do regarding the fund and supporting groups Jan was involved in and encouraging youngsters, but I’m finding it awfully hard without my daughter.”

Peter William Brown, 37, of Lyndale Caravan Park, Knottingley, is accused of murdering the jockeys and will next appear in court in February.
