SWINE flu is estimated to have cost NHS York and North Yorkshire £657,000 last year.
The figures were revealed in a Freedom of Information request made to all primary care trusts in England by the magazine GP.
The PCT said it had covered the cost by using contingency funds that had been set aside for unexpected events.
North Yorkshire and York PCT estimated costs higher than the rest of the North East. Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland estimated costs of £600,000, while Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar, Cleveland and Stockton estimated costs between £266,000 and £286,000.
