A MAN who was allegedly assaulted in Whitby has died in hospital.

William Mark Rimmington, 43, of Leeds, was injured in an incident at the Broadings Farm campsite sometime between May 14 and 15. He died on Wednesday in Scarborough Hospital.

He had initially been arrested on May 15 on suspicion of drink driving. Arresting officers noticed he had injuries to his face and while he was in custody his condition deteriorated and he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with bleeding on his brain. Because Mr Rimmington’s condition worsened while he was in custody, North Yorkshire Police have now themselves referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). The commission will conduct an independent investigation into the police contact with Mr Rimmington.

North Yorkshire Police are conducting a separate criminal investigation into how Mr Rimmington sustained his injuries and have charged Richard Taylor, 39, from the Cross Green area of Leeds, with grievous bodily harm with intent. He was remanded into custody following an appearance at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on May 19.

In a separate twist, Mr Rimmington’s brother, Andrew, has been discharged from prosecution following his brother’s death. Andrew Rimmington had been accused of making a £40,000 profit buying shares in NeuTec Pharma after a tip-off from another lawyer.

Anyone with information about William Rimmington’s death is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.
