Sun seekers have been out and about enjoying the heatwave as temperatures rose across York and North Yorkshire.

Forecasters predicted today would be even hotter than yesterday – reaching 23 degrees and staying the same tomorrow.

It was more like a Mediterranean holiday resort than a North Yorkshire hotel at the Feversham Arms, in Helmsley, yesterday with parents soaking up the sun while their children splashed in the swimming pool.

Owner Simon Rhatigan said: “Two years ago we refurbished the pool and it is always popular with guests, even when it’s snowing, because it is heated.

“But yesterday we had difficulty finding seats for everyone because they’re all sunbathing in what feels like a Mediterranean pool environment. It could be the south of France or Italy or anywhere, with heat radiating off the Yorkshire stone.”

The market town is also home to Helmsley Open Air Pool, in Baxtons Road, which opens for the year on June 19 and is operated by a registered charity.

Members of the David Lloyd Gym in York were also cooling off in the outdoor pool there.

Yorkshire’s beaches were busy with holidaymakers and day-trippers, and visitors thronged York.

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive at Visit York, said: “Fine weather always encourages more visitors to come into the city. Our new Visitor Information Centre has been extremely busy with lots of people coming through the doors, particularly families looking for somewhere to enjoy the sun and recommendations for where to visit during the half-term.

“York is a genuine all-weather destination because of the fantastic range of indoor and outdoor attractions we have to offer, and the sun creates an added bonus to the vibrant atmosphere around the city.”
