TEAMS of firefighters were working through the night to tackle two massive moors fires.
About 200 people were evacuated from a campsite as a result of one of the blazes.
The first fire, at the Eller Beck Bridge, Goathland, close to the A169 and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, was reported at 12.45pm yesterday. Nine fire appliances were sent.
The fire service was then called to a blaze at Spires House Campsite, in the Cropton area, near Pickering, at about 1.45pm.
Ten appliances were sent to tackle the blaze, which covered a one-square-mile fire front, and worked to protect the nearby campsite. It was later evacuated, with about 200 campers moving to alternative accommodation in the area. Though the firefighting effort was scaled down during the evening, efforts to tackle the blazes were set to continue into the early hours of today.
A fire service spokesperson said: “Specialist 4x4 and all-terrain vehicles were mobilised from across the county and firefighters used beaters and water jets to fight the two fires, but it was arduous in the rough terrain and hot weather.”
