A DAY of celebration for the white rose county came a traditional climax as declarations were read out at York’s historic gates.

In the city centre, white roses were donned while a local produce market sold delicacies from across the county to mark Yorkshire Day yesterday.

The Yorkshire Ridings Society – an organisation that works to ensure the integrity of Yorkshire, its three Ridings and all the associated boundaries are maintained – read a declaration of the integrity of Yorkshire at four of the Bars of York and in St Sampson’s Square.

The declaration was read in four languages – Norse, Latin, Old English and modern English, with the latter version being read by Coun John Galvin, the deputy mayor.

The day was also marked by the reopening of the revamped Yorkshire Museum.

In Pickering, The Market Place was closed for music and dancing and the town was bedecked with flags and bunting.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway served a Yorkshire lunch and Pickering Recreation Club held its annual gala.

White, yellow and blue balloons were also released with proceeds from their sale going to the children of Haiti.
