A NORTH Yorkshire man has appeared in court 25 years after the bank robbery he is accused of carrying out in a Derbyshire village.

Alan Murray, 58, is alleged to have taken part in an armed raid on a branch of what was then Lloyds Bank on September 18, 1985.

Yesterday he stood before Chesterfield magistrates charged with robbery, possession of an imitation firearm and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to security guard John Power. The offences relate to an armed raid on Cromford village in the Derbyshire Dales. The prosecution claims Murray was one of three people who took part in a robbery there in 1985 during which they stole more than £7,000 from a safe at the branch of Lloyds’ Bank in the village and made their escape by car.

Security employee Mr Power suffered a gash over his right eye which needed nine stitches during the raid. The prosecution claims he was struck with the butt of a shotgun.

He was 61 at the time and has since died.

Murray, of Woodmans’ House, Pilmoor near Easingwold, did not enter pleas to the charges.

His solicitor, Gerald Booth, indicated he would deny the charges at a later hearing.
