AS the cold snap continues, North Yorkshire communities are encouraged to save police time by looking out for one another.

North Yorkshire Police have appealed to residents to join forces and remember their vulnerable neighbours while cold weather persists across the county.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick, pictured, has stressed the importance of contacting the police in an emergency, but said: “Remember not to abuse the police call system and only call the police with genuine concerns or crimes.

“We are not here to tell you how long you need to cook your turkey, as some misinformed callers believe.

“Local police officers will be doing all they can to ensure our most vulnerable community members are safe this festive season. However, members of the public are also encouraged to play their part by checking on their elderly neighbours and friends, making sure they are safe and warm and have sufficient supplies in stock.

“The current freezing conditions are set to continue into the New Year and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone is the main concern for us and our partners.”

ACC Madgwick has also warned drivers to be sensible over the Christmas period, reminding them that police will be on the lookout for drink-drivers. He said: “Since the start of the Christmas campaign, we have seen motorists who have already lost their licence. It is simply not worth the risk.”

City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Councils have joined the campaign for holiday health, reinforcing the message from the police.

Councillor John Weighell, of North Yorkshire County Council, said: “Almost as important as the services provided by the county council and our partners is the support which people can offer each other.

“Extreme weather generates tremendous community spirit, and I urge people across North Yorkshire to look out for each other, to keep an eye on their neighbours, and generally to help all of us through the big freeze.”
