Ryedale residents will be able to welcome the Olympic Flame next year.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch will arrive in Pickering on board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on June 18, 2012.

Pickering is one of more than 1,000 villages, towns and cities which the flame will be carried by torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

Coun James Fraser, of Ryedale District Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Ryedale residents will have the chance to to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.

“It will provide a chance for Ryedale residents to share in the Olympic spirit and mark the countdown to the start of the Games. I am sure it will inspire young people to get more actively involved in sports.”

The torch will be visiting other areas of the region on its 70-day relay from Land’s End. After visiting York, the torch will be transported on Flying Scotsman to Thirsk.

Selby, Tadcaster, Camblesforth, Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash, Scarborough, Filey and Beverley will also be included on the route, which aims to take in “beautiful natural and urban landmarks to showcase Yorkshire and Humber around the world”.
