WAYS of cracking down on irresponsible dog owners are to come under the spotlight of a House of Commons group chaired by a North Yorkshire MP.

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, of which Thirsk and Malton MP Anne McIntosh is chair, is to consider proposals on the issue which were sent out to consultation by the Government in April, as well as the response by the Government and dog breeders to an independent inquiry on the health of dogs.

It will be seeking views by July 2 and intends to discuss whether the proposed dog-ownership measures will include the necessary enforcement regime and educational support to tackle out-of-control dogs, as well as addressing concerns about the welfare of animals which are linked to breeding.

“Attacks by out-of-control dogs are on the increase, with tragic impacts on individuals, families and communities,” said Ms McIntosh.

“Our inquiry will look closely at whether the Government is doing enough to tackle the problem of irresponsible dog owners and to improve the welfare of all dogs.

“We also want to find out whether enough is being done to improve the health and welfare of dogs bred for sale.”
