RESIDENTS in Ryedale are to be be charged for using credit cards to make payments to their local council from the end of this month.
The 1.65 per cent surcharge on all credit card transactions to Ryedale District Council will come into force on July 26.
The move has led the authority to encourage people to pay by direct debit, by debit card over the phone, through the internet, or in person.
A charge is currently levied on the council for credit card payments by banks. Business support manager Angela Jones said: “Due to the current financial restraints, the council can no longer subsidise the surcharges incurred when customers pay by credit card.
“We therefore encourage all customers to pay by direct debit to avoid any additional costs.”
More information on setting up direct debits is available by phoning 01653 600666.
An online screen for debit card payments can be found at ryedale.gov.uk
There is also a freephone debit card payment service available at 0800 0351566 and Ryedale House remains open between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday for payments in person.
