ON-LOAN full-back Curtis Obeng knew he was coming to a “good club” when he arrived at York City from Premier League Swansea City.

Obeng was no stranger to the Minstermen’s potential, having won only one of his six meetings against his new club when he was a Wrexham player.

One of those matches saw City romp to a 3-0 win at the Racecourse Ground last season and that memory was fresh in Obeng’s mind when the chance arose to come to Bootham Crescent on loan.

“I knew York were a good team and that the set-up is good,” said Obeng, who made his debut in Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Morecambe.

“From what I’d seen before, everyone knew their jobs and the team was disciplined and hard to break down.

“Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case on Saturday and the game got away from us late on.

“You always want to try and go to a good club and, even though the club are where they are in the table, that can easily change and there are a lot of good players, a good manager and good staff here.”

Obeng argued Saturday’s final outcome was unfair on his new team but added that the side will need to perform better at both ends of the pitch at Wycombe this weekend, saying: “We were quite unlucky in that the result did not reflect the game.

“We did really well for three-quarters of the match and had the majority of the ball. We just couldn’t get it in the back of the net.

“Chances are few and far between at this level and you’ve just got to try to put them in because, if you don’t, the opposition get their opportunities and can punish you.

“But we also know you can’t concede four goals in a game like we did. We needed to be tighter at the back and more clinical up top.”

The Stretford-born defender, who turns 24 on Valentine’s Day, also promises there is more to come from himself.

He added: “It was my first game for a while and I felt okay. I started to feel it a bit later on and, personally, feel I can play better as well. We will all just try to improve in the next game.”

City boss Gary Mills, meanwhile, has already suggested he would like to extend Obeng’s stay beyond the initial month agreed with Swansea and the player is also open to that possibility.

He said: “I will have to speak to Swansea to see what options are open to me but I’m enjoying it here.

“The club have good players and good ambitions so we will assess things after a month.”
