YORK City manager Gary Mills is backing his team to end their ten-game winless run after a 94th-minute equaliser denied them a first victory since New Year’s Day at Rotherham United.
Daniel Nardiello’s injury-time strike cancelled out Matty Blair’s earlier second-half effort to leave the Minstermen just four points above the npower League Two relegation zone.
But Mills is confident that his team will pull clear of the bottom two if they reproduce the form they showed at the Millers’ New York Stadium tonight.
The City boss said: “We all want that win but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s a hard one to take but, if we keep performing like that, it’s got to come.
“Football is about winning and we haven’t won enough but I don’t want anybody to be down.
“We’ve got to take a lot of heart from tonight’s performance.
“We’ve not had it easy over the last ten games but we will keep believing in how we play, which I think is the right way.
“I know if we play like we did against Rotherham that we will get the points to make sure we are playing in this division next season.”
On his team’s performance, Mills added: “We worked hard at Oxford and I felt we surpassed that tonight.
“Our shape, quality and discipline was excellent.
“You wondered with the run we are on whether what happened might happen when the board went up with five minutes and there were a few things we could have done better for their goal but it’s another draw away from home and, maybe, we would have taken that before the game but I thought we were different class to Rotherham.
“We were playing against a team that bang it forward and you have to deal with the second balls and the back four were outstanding in that respect.”
Blair was also on the scoresheet for the first time since New Year’s Day and Mills has been pleased with his return to an attacking midfield role, saying: “That position suits him with his energy.
“He got in on two occasions and we could have picked out some of his other runs as well.”
