RAY Wynn, secretary and treasurer of York City Supporters' Club, said it was always "inevitable" that Clayton Donaldson would move on but that it was "hugely disappointing" the Minstermen wouldn't receive any money for him.

Wynn said: "He's too good for our side and eventually he was always going to go. It's very disappointing (about the money). It would have been of huge benefit to the club.

"He has got such potential and there must have been a lot of clubs fighting to get him. I feel very disappointed for the board who, I am sure, have been trying to get the best possible deal for him."

Regular City watcher Robert Beaumont, who has sponsored games at KitKat Crescent, said: "We should be thankful for small mercies and that he's staying till the end of the season.

"Any hope of getting promotion or reaching the play-offs without him would be minimal. With Clayton Donaldson playing and 100 per cent committed, I would say that City have a very good chance of reaching the play-offs.

"The bad news is that the club will not get a penny for someone who is worth £500,000. I can see the hand of Clayton Donaldson's agent in this.

"In my opinion, agents at this level are the scourge of lower league clubs and I feel City have been treated pretty shabbily. For that I would blame the agent of Clayton Donaldson."

City super-fan George Rowe, who never misses a match home or away, said: "I am disappointed to say the least but we have got him until the end of the season and let's hope he can get us up.

"Football is his job, his living, and I suppose players have got to get the best while they can.

"You can't really blame him for that. Everyone knows the only loyalty in football any more is not on the pitch, or in the boardroom, it's with the fans."
