Former Scotland international Derek Riordan on trial at York City

Riordan, 33, is set to play for the Minstermen in tomorrow night's North Riding Senior Cup tie at Guisborough Town, as Bootham Crescent chief Jackie McNamara weighs up whether to offer a contract to the unattached attacker, who last played for East Fife in the Scottish League's second division last season.

Riordan was the Scottish Premier League's Young Player of the Year in 2005 and topped Hibernian's scoring charts for three successive seasons with tallies of 18, 23 and 20 goals.

That earned him a move to Celtic Park in 2006 after Hibs rejected a £400,000 bid from Rangers and Riordan rejected moves to Cardiff, Locomotiv Moscow and Kaiserslautern.

He scored five times in 24 outings for the Glasgow giants and, despite a £400,000 offer from Burnley, went on to rejoin Hibs in 2008.

Riordan won the last of his three caps in November 2009 against Wales and, later, became the first Hibs player to score 100 goals for the club since Arthur Duncan 30 years earlier.

The 6ft forward left Edinburgh, though, for Chinese Super League club Shaanxi Chan-Ba and has led a nomadic existence ever since.

Lasting just four months with Shaanxi, Ridordan attracted interest from Italy and Turkey and went on trial with an unnamed Spanish La Liga side either side of spells with St Johnstone and Bristol Rovers, where he failed to net in a dozen outings during 2012/13.

Stints with Alloa and Brechin followed and last season he scored two goals in nine matches for East Fife.

McNamara is now keen to see whether Riordan is worth a punt by running the rule over him at Guisborough.

"We need to see if we can get him fit because he's not played a lot of games recently," the City chief reasoned. "I've no doubt about the ability, quality and experience he possesses.

"He just needs to show us that he is sharp enough. If he is, he could give us a bit of quality in that final third.

"He doesn't carry a lot of weight and has a good level of fitness but tomorrow's game, if it goes ahead because it's in doubt due to the weather, will show us how sharp he is. He's been to different countries and played one game this season for a small team in Scotland as a favour for their manager, but he's looking to get back into the game and he's trained with us a week now.

"Anybody who looks at clips of his goals will see that he has ability with both feet and with free kicks. He can also hold the ball and up and has the vision to pick the right pass for people running in behind defences to hurt teams.

"If he still has the hunger and sharpness, then he can do well for us."

Riordan is set to be joined by nine City players with first-team experience at the King George V Stadium for a 7.45pm kick off. Goalkeeper Michael Ingham, along with Marvin McCoy, Taron Hare, George Swan, Eddie Nolan, Josh Carson, Tom Platt, Anthony Straker, Emile Sinclair and Callum Rzonca, are all poised to feature with McNamara adding: "We need to get minutes into some of the players.

"One or two haven't had a lot of game time and I've only been able to look at them either in training or the footage before I arrived here. Tom Platt hasn't featured all season and Callum Rzonca's only played 22 minutes as a substitute twice.

"We also need to see how Emile Sinclair is after his injury and Josh Carson, who has done well in training, so let's see if we can get a full match out of him."

The likes of McCombe, McCoy and Nolan remain on the transfer list with McNamara saying: "We're trying to get them somewhere else but, four weeks on from me telling them they're not in my plans, they're still with us. Hopefully, we can get something fixed up soon."

McNamara still plans to bring Newcastle's Slovakia under-21 international centre-back Lubo Satka on loan, meanwhile, this week.

"He will give us good cover and another option in that position, although I was happy with the defence on Saturday," the City boss explained. "The two new boys (Luke Hendrie and Kyle Cameron) did well and I've been really impressed with Dave Winfield since he came back into the team. He's been a leader for us.

"We've just got to be better in other areas. Our ball retention when we go from middle to front needs to be better and has been a big problem.

"We should have scored two goals on Saturday as well and have only got 33 in all competitions this season, which isn't good enough."

McNamara and his assistant Simon Donnelly will be guests of East Riding Minstermen on Thursday at The Cross Keys Hotel in Pocklington.

The pair will be free to answer supporters' questions from 7.30pm.
