ANTIGUAN internationals Gayson Gregory and Damien Farrell went on trial for York City during last night's 3-1 friendly victory at Newcastle Benfield.
Striker Gregory and centre-back Farrell have been recommended to the Minstermen by former Northern Ireland boss Bryan Hamilton, who is now a consultant to the Antiguan national team.
Farrell played the first 45 minutes of last night's match alongside David McGurk while Gregory started the match on the left-wing before being moved to centre-forward.
He was also substituted at half-time before being re-introduced for the last 20 minutes by City boss Billy McEwan.
Gregory plays for Freeman's Village in his homeland while Farrell belongs to league rivals Cable and Wireless Empire.
About their efforts, McEwan said: "They didn't do badly. It's difficult coming in on trial and playing 45 minutes but they tried and worked hard."
Former Weymouth defender Brian Dutton and Blyth Spartans goalkeeper Adam Bartlett also featured as trialists in the second-half and McEwan is expected to include the quartet in Saturday's squad to face Doncaster Rovers at KitKat Crescent.
City won last night's game thanks to two spectacular second-half strikes from Martyn Woolford and a close-range effort from skipper Manny Panther.
But Richard Brodie did not enjoy a happy return to former club Benfield, picking up an early head injury which required five staples after clashing with home goalkeeper Andrew Grainger.
Darren Craddock also played no part in the match because of a slight hamstring strain.
McEwan absolved Grainger of any blame for the Brodie incident afterwards, adding: "You will get that from time to time if you go in there."
Benfield took a 43rd-minute lead through Paul Buzzeo during a close-fought first-half and McEwan was pleased with the test provided by Paul Baker's part-timers.
He said: "They gave us a decent workout on a good pitch."
