FORMER York City goalkeeper Gordon Morritt has died at the age of 76.
Morritt made 52 appearances for the Minstermen, racking up a a dozen outings during the club's fourth-division, promotion-winning campaign of 1970/71.
He made his City debut during a 3-1 defeat at Oldham in November 1969 and his last game was a 2-1 loss against Chesterfield in December 1971.
Morritt had previously played 88 times for home-town club Rotherham between 1961 and 1966.
He helped the Millers reach the inaugural League Cup final in 1961 and, although he didn't play in the two-legged tussle against Aston Villa, he received a runners-up medal.
The versatile Morritt also regularly played as a striker for Rotherham's reserves and scored 22 goals in 14 games as the South Yorkshire outfit won the North Regional League title in 1963.
He played one outfield match, meanwhile, for the Millers' first team in a League Cup tie against Swansea.
After leaving Rotherham, spells followed with South African side Durban City, Doncaster and Northampton and, with Ron Hillyard established as City's number one, he left the Minstermen before ending his career at Rochdale and Darlington.
He stayed in the York area after hanging up his gloves and worked as a police officer for five years before working in security.
Morritt was also a greenkeeper at Pike Hills Golf Club and was York Rugby League Club's kitman in the mid-1990s.
