FORMER West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards claimed a superb 5-49 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 181 during a dominant opening day for second-placed Hampshire at Emerald Headingley.

Edwards, 37, bounded in from the Kirkstall Lane End on a day interrupted by rain and, briefly, bad light, returning a season’s best haul.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s 45 was the feature innings for a White Rose side who elected to bat first before this Specsavers County Championship clash started at 12.20pm.

David Willey also hit a bullish 34 on his return to county colours after his World Cup omission, but no one else reached 20 in bowler-friendly conditions as the innings lasted a little less than 57 overs.

Hampshire then closed a day which had its start delayed and was then interrupted on five further occasions on 14-1 from 9.1 overs. Twenty seven were lost in the day.

The White Rose will be frustrated that, aside from Kohler-Cadmore and Willey, the other five of their top seven batsmen all posted scores in the teens without going on.

Keith Barker claimed two wickets and James Fuller three as swing proved the primary aid for the seamers.

Yorkshire made a healthy start by reaching 44-0 in the seventh over, in the early stages of the afternoon.

But they slipped to 65-3 after 15 as Harry Brook (17), Adam Lyth (18) and Gary Ballance for 12 all fell.

Brook was the first to go when he played on against Edwards before Lyth edged Barker to Joe Weatherley at second slip and Ballance was caught behind by substitute wicketkeeper Aneurin Donald.

Brook was playing loosely outside his off-stump before Lyth was dropped by Weatherley shortly before atoning for his error.

Ballance was then caught behind pushing forwards. Donald had replaced Tom Alsop behind the stumps after lunch, with the latter feeling unwell.

Kohler-Cadmore and Jack Leaning then shared 51 for the fourth wicket until just after tea when the latter departed for 19 - caught at first slip by Ajinkya Rahane off Fuller, leaving Yorkshire 116-4 in the 36th over.

Kohler-Cadmore, however, played confidently, with a couple of eye-catching straight drives down the ground off Fuller.

Unfortunately, after some encouraging early work, Yorkshire were to slip badly as they lost their last six wickets for 50 runs and their last five for only 11.

Fuller, in the side for injured South African Kyle Abbott (calf), yorked Kohler-Cadmore six overs after Leaning had fallen as the hosts fell back into trouble at 131-5 in the 42nd.

Then they could do little about the pace and accuracy of skiddy Edwards, who claimed four of the last five wickets to fall.

He had Jonny Tattersall feathering behind as the score fell to 170-6 in the 50th over and Willey, who hit six fours in his first 28 runs, miscuing to Barker at mid-on shortly afterwards.

Steve Patterson and Ben Coad were both bowled, the latter with the first ball back after a brief bad light delay, before Fuller wrapped up the innings by getting Dom Bess sharply caught in the gully by Ian Holland.

Coad then trapped Oli Soames lbw with the first ball of the day’s last over to give Yorkshire some late cheer.
