CITY of York Athletic Club's Freya Vidal became England under-15 200m champion at the annual England Athletics championships in Manchester during a strong month for the team.
Vidal finished fourth at the English Schools championships last month but went to the top of the podium at her next competition held on the same Sportcity track.
The Beverley-based teenager came through strongly in the last 60m to take first pace in 25.76 in cool, wet and windy conditions on Sunday, August 8.
Coach Paul Daynes commented: "It is a great reward for all the hard work she has put in over the last 12 months."
Vidal went on to win gold at the 200m during Northern Athletics Championships in Hull at the weekend.
Also taking pride of place on the podium from City of York were Jessica Robertson-Dover, who won the U17 1500m steeplechase, and Esme Pounder, who won the U15 75m hurdles.
U15 star Emily Maude took silver in both the 75m hurdles and the long jump while U13 athlete Sophie Williams claimed second place in the long jump.
There were a host of bronzes for the club. U17s Rosie Hickling (80m hurdles), Frances Hogg (300m) and Isaac Henson (400m hurdles) all claimed medals as well as U15s Katarina Sankovic (300m), Joshua Sandwell (800m), Esme Pounder (long jump) and Kathryn Clague (shot put).
