OLLY DYSON is hoping that York City’s FA Cup run can continue long enough to provide an away trip to boyhood club Leeds United.
York host Morpeth Town in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup this weekend at the LNER Community Stadium and are just one win away from the competition’s first round proper stage.
Should City progress in the final qualifying stage, they could face sides from the Sky Bet League One and League Two thereafter.
While a third round tie against Premier League outfit Leeds is still a sizeable task for the Vanarama National League Minstermen, Dyson hopes York can progress as far as possible to keep alive a dream personal tie.
“You either want to go as far as you can or play the best (teams) that you can,” said Leeds fan Dyson.
“For me, this is the furthest that I have gone anyway so it’s good, every round is new for me, I’ve not played in many FA Cup (games).
“On Saturday, they’re going to be the underdogs and that’s a challenge for us.
“That still excites me as much as going to Sunderland.
“We just need to play, go as far as we can… and then get Elland Road,” Dyson laughed.
Dyson will be hoping that City can build on the weekend’s 3-1 victory over Southport which saw York return to winning ways in the league after the shock defeat to Hereford.
Reflecting on the result, he said: “I think that we played well in both halves.
“Obviously going into second half at 1-1, we knew we needed to perform and we needed to get a few chances.
“To be fair, it should have been more than 3-1, we should have put it to bed earlier.”
City were a goal up heading into the dying stages but it was not until Dyson’s late tap-in, one of several chances for the winger, that the victory was secured.
He said: “I played a bit higher so I tried to get in and around the box. I had a few chances and it didn’t really fall to my feet. But that one, I couldn’t really miss.”
