YORK Indoor Bowls Club are through to the next round of the Denny Cup after defeating New Earswick 83-68, writes Terry Shepherdson, writes Terry Shepherdson.
New Earswick made a slow start as Dave Counter, Bob Elliot, Gary Jones and Paul Dawson picked up just three singles from the first 10 ends.
York then moved into a 16-5 lead after 13 ends before the two sides matches one another and New Earswick were beaten 22-10.
Then, New Earswick got off to a flyer as Alan Shearer, Paul Murray, John Harrison and Colin Pickup put them 9-0 ahead.
York though fought back strongly and New Earswick had to win the final end to claim an 18-18 draw.
The two rinks at Thanet Road turned out to be a pair of close encounters.
After being 9-2 down, Wayne Osguthorpe, Andy Humphreys Dick Osguthorpe and Adam Trinder remarkably sent New Earswick into a 17-10 advantage.
York edged in front by the back end of the match and won 24-20.
New Earswick did prevail in the fourth and final rink as Dave Clayden, Andrew Fothergill, Rob Domville and Kevin Liddell started the stronger and led 14-6.
York hit back to level the tie at 19-19 heading into the last end which New Earswick inched to run out 20-19 winners.
It was York though who progressed into the next round of the competition as overall victors and they will face Hornsea next month.
