YORK Knavesmire Harriers senior ladies’ cross country team continued their winning ways with victory at the second race in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League on Sunday.
Although not as emphatic as their team win at the first race - where they claimed the first four places - they were still easily the strongest team at Nunroyd Park, Leeds, with the ‘A’ team’s first four to count all in the top 15 .
In the five-kilometre women’s race, YKH’s Helen Cross was third overall, followed in fourth by recent Yorkshire Marathon winner Becky Penty, seventh-placed Josie Rawes and, in 13th position, Yorkshire Three Peaks winner Rose Mather.
They were supported by Nik Tarrega (14th), Rebekah Thomas (16th), Jessica Slater (21st), Megan Anderson (28th), Aoife Burke (42nd), Becky Sizer (49th), Clare Rowntree (55th), Hannah Strange (75th), Sarah Thorne (76th), Pauline Foot (79th), Qin Zhou (81st), Kerry Archer (87th) and Teddy Wilcox (101st).
In the 10k senior men’s race the Mire men finished as a respectable sixth team out of 15 .
Laurence Griffin (22nd), Ed Hooper (27th) and Gareth Green (30th) led the club home with excellent runs and were followed home by Giles Hawking (49th), Rob Ward (68th) and Barry Atkinson (91st) as the six-man scoring team.
The team was well supported by Rory Henderson (92nd), Stephen Porritt (122nd), Pete Downes (125th) and Alistair McQueen (143rd).
City of York Athletic Club had a good day at the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League on Saturday at Guiseley, with five individual winners and four wins in the team events from 42 runners across 10 races.
Great Britain triathlete Sam Dickinson won the senior men's race for the club after making a decisive break halfway round the last lap to win the 9.2k race by 14 seconds in a time of 31:32.
Senior debutant Joe O’Brien came third and, with the six scorers finishing in the top 26, the club comfortably won the team event.
Twelfth-placed Izzi O’Brien was first home in the senior women’s race, with the team finishing 6th.
The club also did well in the junior races. Lucas Stabler (third) and Ed Brown (fourth) led the club home in the under-17 men’s race as the club took the team title.
City of York had both individual winners in the U15 age group races. Isaac Stabler made a late break to win the 4k race in a time of 14.04 while Lottie Langan’s commanding last lap saw her win the girl’s event by 100 metres in a time of 10:30 for the 3k race.
The club won the team event in both U15 races.
Daniel Campbell won the 3k U13 boys' event in a time of 10:31 while the U13 girls came second in the team competition.
Ollie Wright was a convincing winner of the 1.5k U11 race in a time of 4:58, 16 seconds ahead of the second-placed runner.
