JOHN ASKEY wants to help York City enjoy more days like Saturday’s remarkable FA Trophy quarter-final win at Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Minstermen were seconds away from exiting the competition before Maxim Kouogun won a penalty in the closing stages of six minutes of stoppage time.
With the last kick of the game, Clayton Donaldson netted an audacious panenka penalty to cancel out Paul McCallum’s 15th-minute opener.
And City went on to triumph 7-6 in a thrilling, nerve-racking penalty shoot-out, which went one way and then the other before Pete Jameson saved Dagenham’s ninth spot kick to send the 800-plus travelling fans into raptures.
“That’s why it’s so important that we try and get back to where we want to be, so that there’s more days (like this),” manager Askey said.
“I’m not getting carried away. We all want the same thing. Whether myself and the team can produce that for the club – we hope so.
“It’s a club that deserves that.
“It’s great for those who have been supporting through thick and thin.
“And the younger ones – we hope we can get a few more coming to watch. To finish the game off like that, it’s great cup football."
