JOHN ASKEY has said he wants to look at breaking down stubborn opposition after York City drew 0-0 at home to Curzon Ashton.
It was not City’s best performance, coming off the back of their heart-stopping FA Trophy win at Dagenham at the weekend – and the visitors were much the happier of the two sides with the draw.
City came on strongly at the end in a game of few real chances, which was in part the product of a slightly tired-seeming York, and in part the natural conclusion to Curzon’s dogged containment strategy.
“Sometimes when you’ve been in a game like (Dagenham) it takes a lot of energy – nervous energy, sometimes, which can affect you in the following game,” said manager Askey.
“But we still should have enough in us to win the game.
“What we’ve got to have a look at is if teams that are going to sit in and stop Akil getting on the ball, we’ve probably got to get more rotation in midfield to get more midfield players on the ball, and Akil starts to make runs forward.
“It’s something we need to look at and hopefully if we come across it again, we’ll be better.”
Despite the frustration, York can take heart from another game in what is now an 11-game unbeaten run, of which this was just the third stalemate.
“They’ve come and tried to put as many men behind the ball as possible, hoping to hit us on the break,” Askey said. “We didn’t have enough to break them down.
“I thought towards the end, we came on stronger as they got tired and we had half-chances we could have converted.
“But games like that when we’ve not been at our best, the main thing is to keep a clean sheet and we did that.
“We keep our run going.”
